Return of the Weekly Instagram Contest
Aside from storm spotting, the Weekly Instagram Challenge was our only recurring means for any participant to earn AtmoCup points for their school. This changed when we scrapped the challenge’s hosting article series, The Weekly Siren Test, due to low click-to-writing-effort ratios. With storm season beginning to wind down, we want to guarantee that AtmoCup points will continue to be earned during the final 2 weeks of our inaugural season. Therefore we decided to revive our Weekly Instagram Challenge as part of our standings updates.
THIS WEEK’S CHALLENGE:
Tag AtmoLife in a photo/video of the coolest weather you’ve captured from an airplane. Below is our example.
RETURN OF THE WEEKLY INSTAGRAM CHALLENGE: Tag us in a photo/video of the coolest weather you've captured from an airplane. Here's our example of descending through cumulus congestus heaven. Winner earns a free AtmoLife koozie and 3 #AtmoCup2017 points for their school. Entries due by 12z next Friday.
Be sure to submit your entries by 12z next Friday (6/23). In our standings update next week, we will announce the winner and award them with a free AtmoLife koozie along with 3 AtmoCup points for their school.
Rundown of New Points
3/7 – NC State, 3 Points – Weekly Instagram Challenge, As announced in our final Weekly Siren Test (which we had yet to award points for because there was never a follow up WST post)
Just to refresh, our challenge that week was “Tag us in an Instagram photo/video of your go-to hiding spot from tornadoes. This can be a real or satirical shelter.”
Here was the winning response from jessmsuggs of NC State:
In addition to 3 AtmoCup points, jessmsuggs has also won a free AtmoLife koozie!

It remains a tight competition between Colorado State and NC State down the stretch as they continue to trade blows. Unless a 3rd program manages to catch lightning in a bottle (perhaps literally) on a storm chase, these two schools may continue to pull away from the pack. NC State has been particularly desperate to reclaim their lead, but instead they have reclaimed the 3st place medal (previously held by Texas A&M).
It doesn’t count for any AtmoCup points, but you NC State folks have reclaimed the 3st Place medal for your continued efforts. pic.twitter.com/5Y1XMkvMgO

They still trail CSU by 2 points however, and only one of these meteorology programs will earn the right to have their name engraved on this bad boy.

Ways you can earn AtmoCup points for your school RIGHT NOW
Here are the complete rules and details of our 2017 AtmoCup competition listing the many ways in which you can earn points. We’ll be sure to post this link in each weekly update for your convenience. Here’s a brief overview of this week’s opportunities:
- Storm spotting (As described in the rules)
- Random bonus points (If you’re gonna pander, be creative!)
- Claim the unclaimed bracket from our NCAA Tournament challenge. (You gotta prove it was your bracket, but it’s 5 points just sitting there. UPDATE: I think some rando joined the group and made this bracket because nobody is claiming this.)
- The glorious return of our Weekly Instagram Challenge!
Storm spotting is still your best bet for earning AtmoCup points by the bunches as our competition concludes. For your convenience, here’s the list detailing how many points each storm item you claim is worth.
It seems unlikely that you’ll get to claim any of the winter weather phenomena at this point in the year (sorry Snownado fans). This means you gotta go out and chase some real storms if you wanna win the AtmoCup! You have until 0z July 1st, so tell the boss you’ll be back to work then.
